This is a little text document i wrote for a friend with a basic
tutorial on how to use "build". Build is basically the map editor used in Duke Nukem 3D. Notice how i have all
the lame credits. This has been left intact, expect for a few changes to make it look
better on the site.
well first of all you need to start it ...but something you need to know before you do
that is know alt-tab you should press this to get back to windows so you can read this
document and expariment (you may also want to go into options and put on wordwrap so this
docuement dosen't look like one long line (not the way it is supposed to look)
ok the lesson is to create a new "sector" (a room) to do this use the space
buttoon to insert a "point" (like a veticy..(however you spell that) or a corner
of a room ect...) then you need to do this in the shape of the "sector" untill
you finally end up at the first point that you "inserted"...
now to goto the 3D mode by hitting enter on the keypad on the right...when there you
should have a room barely high enough to stand and the walls are all brick as well as the
ceiling and floor next you can make the ceiling higher by pressing the "page up"
key and the "page down" key (you should get which does up and which does down
...i hope if not....well..... you shouldn't be using this editor and probally never will
be smart enough to use it...) when you got that good enough you can change the graphic of
the walls and ceiling and floors by moving the cursor over the corrisponding wall and
pressing the "v" key ...
-----------------------------------------
Note: the "v" key should get you to a screen where it shows all the textures for
that certain thing (hence if you did the "v" button on a wall you would get a
list of all the textures you HAVE USED for the walls in that level... this is just to help
you locate some graphics faster cuz it may be near them...when you get to the one nearest
the graphic you want.. press "v" again and then get the exact graphic you
want...if it is already used you can just put the highlighted thingy over it and press
enter without having to press "v" a second time.
-----------------------------------------
now...some more in the 3D viewing part... to slant the floor or ceiling use the
"[" and "]" keys (this varies which way it slopes...i hate using this
is frustrates me) and the last thing for 3d editor yu NEED to know is the "s"
key...it makes a "sprite" (a monster, weapon, ammo, dancing girl ect...) you can
change it using the same way as for the textures of walls and ceilings and floors...
now back to the 2D editor ....
*******some more stuff... to make a sector INSIDE of another do the same thing as before
but... if you want the sector to be like something that comes up from the ground you need
to do that TWICE over the EXACT sector (only if it is in a sector) to make it able to do
that...
------------------------------------------
Note: the "s" key also works in this mode
------------------------------------------
the space button is used alot .... be sure to know this action really good.... another
thing it does is splits a sector... e.g. if you have a square room (4 by 4 big ...i know
it is kinda smal but ..) and you only want it 2 by 4 then "insert" a point with
the (obviously) "insert" key where you want to split it ...(both sides) and
press space with the curser on one of those points and move it to the other point and
press space again... if done right it will split it ...
------------------------------------------
Note: you can get REAL complex with just these...i have tried it and it can get pretty
complex so don't think you can't make good maps with just this knowledge ....cuz you can
------------------------------------------
i would get into the sector effectors and tags ect... but it is TOO complicated (and i
forgot most of it hehehe) if you need further help read the (tremendously huge) build help
file...this is just to get you started with the basics...not any of that complicated stuff
