Parasite Eve VS Parasite Eve 2

Parasite eve came into the game market in the late 90's (1998 seems about right) bringing with it a unique battle system. Couple that with the leveling up system and cinematic story telling, and you have one awesome game. I know some people called it a copy of resident evil, but the truth is that Parasite eve was everything resident evil wasn't. The only real thing it had in common with resident evil was how the creatures you fight were brought into existance (which is really just a superficial connection to begin with) and that they both used guns.

Fast forward 2 years to 2000, and the release of Parasite Eve 2. For some reason unknown to me, Squaresoft decided to discard EVERYTHING that made parasite eve such an awesome gaming experience. They followed resident evil's turn left/right and move forward/backward approach to controlling your character as opposed to the much easier to understand and use move your character the way you move the joystick approach.

This new controll scheme is just too complex, and it's not helped at all by the constantly changing camera angles which may look good if you're directing a movie, but aren't practical. It also is inconsistant, they end up alianating alot of their original fan base by changing it. The best thing they could have done was have both options available. Those who preferred the old style could have it, and those that actually preferred resident evil controlls, could choose to use them.

While they were working on fucking over the controlls, someone decided that they were too good to use anything remotely resembling the original weapon and armor upgrade system. The only other thing from PE that made it stand out from all the other rpgs and action games.

I firmly believe whoever made the decision to change those things, killed the series. Parasite Eve 2 could have been done better, but because of the rediculous changes It's unlikely that we'll see anything more from the Parasite Eve universe. I'd like to see a prequel that takes place in japan when the first eve appeared. That story could be done really well, so long as they don't fuck up the battle/leveling system again.
